The "I Have A Dream" Foundation® – New York sponsors cohorts of 50-100 students in public housing developments and under-resourced public schools, and works with these "Dreamers" from early elementary school through high school to provide a program of academic support, mentoring, and tuition assistance.
The mission of the “I Have A Dream” Foundation® – New York (IHDF-NY) is to motivate and empower children living in low-income communities to reach their educational and career potential by providing a long-term program of academic support, mentoring, enrichment, and tuition assistance for higher education. IHDF-NY is currently working with 542 Dreamers, 235 of whom are in 1st through 12th grade at four active sites across New York City and 307 Dreamers from five cohorts who are in college and beyond. Cohorts of 50-100 Dreamers each are identified as young as first grade through partnerships with public housing developments and under-resourced public schools; IHDF-NY works closely with these students from the point of identification through high school, providing a rigorous program of academic support and encouragement, mentoring, and SAT and college preparation, with the ultimate goals of high school graduation and overall personal development and wellness.
The program also offers participants dynamic experiences that boost their confidence, build moral character, and engage them with a wide variety of subjects, including: the arts, employable skills training, health and wellness, and the importance of community service. Additionally, IHDF-NY provides guaranteed tuition assistance for higher education to any Dreamer who graduates from high school. By helping our Dreamers gain access to college, IHDF-NY puts them on a different academic and life trajectory, enabling them to break the cycle of poverty and improve their changes for a successful future.
Dreamers have an 88% high school graduation rate, significantly above the New York City average of 65%. The majority of Dreamers currently enrolled in IHDF-NY cohorts show academic improvement from baseline to their most current report card; Dreamers also have lower incarceration and teen pregnancy rates compared to their peer group.
The success of our Dreamers is proof that investing in children’s futures from an early age and providing them with academic and social support can better ensure personal development and college and career opportunities.
Our mission is to motivate and empower children living in low-income communities to reach their educational and career potential by providing a long-term program of academic support, mentoring, enrichment, and tuition assistance for higher education.
