Minds Matter of NYC

Preparing low-income high school students for college.

Our Story

Minds Matter is a national not-for-profit organization serving high-achieving, low-income students in cities across the United States.

Since its inception in New York City in 1991, the effectiveness of Minds Matter has been affirmed - 100% of our students have been accepted into a four-year college. The organization has expanded to eleven cities, including Boston, Chicago, Cleveland, Denver, Los Angeles, New York, Philadelphia, Portland, San Francisco, Seattle and the Twin Cities.

We utilize the power of 500 adult volunteers to serve over 170 students in their pursuit of a college education through mentoring, writing and critical thinking instruction, and SAT/ACT prep. With an average GPA of 3.7, our students have unlimited potential; but with an average family income of just over $17,000, they need our help to reach it.

Our mission is to transform the lives of accomplished high school students from low-income families by broadening their dreams and preparing them for college success.
