Bessie's Hope
My Appeal
Bessie’s Hope is the only organization in the country focusing on providing education and training to volunteers of all ages, preschool to adult, so our volunteers can have comfortable, meaningful interaction with and cultivate mutually rewarding relationships with nursing home elders of all cognitive functioning levels, including advanced Alzheimer’s Disease. Sixty percent of nursing home elders, nationally, receive NO personal visitors. We work with approximately 2,000 youth and hundreds of adults each year who join us in enhancing the lives of these wonderful elders. Our culture embraces ageism by teaching at a very early age that the older a person becomes, the less they become. Ageism doesn’t exist within Bessie’s Hope volunteers, because they see the elders in a new perspective, as resources of vast wisdom, knowledge and life experiences. We honor, respect and empower the elders through our volunteer programs that provide listening ears and loving touch. It’s imperative that Bessie’s Hope is here waiting with live hugs when the doors open again!

My Cause
The Mission:
Bessie’s Hope enhances the quality of life for nursing home and assisted living elders by bringing generations together in mutually rewarding relationships that honor the human spirit and create life-enriching volunteer opportunities for youth, families, individuals, community organizations and businesses.
About the Organization:
Bessie’s Hope is a legacy to our co-founder’s grandmother, Bessie “Granny” Stephens. The co-founders are pioneers in intergenerational work. After 26 years, Bessie’s Hope is still the only organization in the nation that brings youth groups, preschool through high school, including residential treatment centers for troubled teens; adult groups; individuals; and families into elder care facilities through structured volunteer programs. Key to the success are the education, training, communication tools and resources necessary to ensure meaningful, comfortable interactions and relationships with elders of all cognitive functioning levels, including advanced Alzheimer's Disease.
