My Appeal
I am proud to be living my childhood dream of practicing veterinary medicine. However, most days bring more stressful cases and difficult clients than cute puppies. Burnout, depression, anxiety and suicide are all too prevalent in this field. Veterinarians are admired for our compassion and dedication, yet the very qualities that make us great clinicians also stretch our boundaries and compromise our wellbeing. Can we fit in one more urgent appointment on an already double-booked day? One more phone call before clocking out? One more emergency surgery for a client who cannot afford to go to the ER?

This August, we lost my Cornell classmate, Dr. Samantha Schwalje, much too soon. Sam was a fierce animal welfare advocate, a devoted rat mom, a talented surgeon, a brilliant artist, and a generous friend. I am participating in this charity walk in honor of Sam and in solidarity with every veterinary professional who is practicing during this difficult time. COVID-19 has somehow led to an incredible rise in caseload despite reductions in hospital capacity, uncertainty with staff availability and unprecedented challenges of curbside medicine. We need to maintain healthy boundaries and take care of ourselves before we can provide the best care possible for our patients and clients. We need to support one another and ask for help when we are struggling. Not One More Vet provides numerous resources and a huge online community to remind veterinarians that we are never alone in the challenges we face.

Donations to NOMV go toward valuable programs including:

1) A large online peer support network

2) An educational program providing leadership focused on wellness

3) A grant program funding mental health services and relief coverage for struggling individuals

4) An anonymous crisis support system specifically designed for veterinary professionals.

Furthermore, funding is needed for ongoing research and new projects such as an exciting new peer counseling program. Thank you for joining me in supporting this vital organization!
