My Appeal

Greetings to my wonderful friends and family,



In the next 10 weeks I will be running, walking, hiking and paddling at least 200 miles in support of my veterinary colleagues, and the group, Not One More Vet.

NOMV is an online support group of over 20,000 veterinarians. The group was founded in 2014 to bring awareness to a tragic trend……1 in 6 veterinarians has considered suicide, and veterinarians are far more likely than other professionals to complete suicide. While the paths that we take to get to this point are unique, the story that we tell ourselves over and over again is the same. We are not good enough. We have failed. The words flash through your mind after you are unable to save an animal. Whether the problem was medical, financial or something else, the message is the same. I’ve failed. Combine this with crippling debt loads compared to income, increasing ability of the public to attack from the shadows of the internet, and a once impassioned and idealistic savior of animals can feel as though there is no way out.

There is not a vet I know who hasn’t been touched by this heartbreaking reality. In the last 2 years not only have I lost a classmate to suicide, but I have spoken with many colleagues across the country and in my life, who have lost a friend or a loved one too.



In addition, the Covid-19 crisis has greatly increased the need for wellness and mental health in the veterinary profession. To keep up with demand for services during this crucial time, NOMV must grow. The Race Around the World is a fundraiser that embraces that mission. In the next 10 weeks members of the profession and their allies plan to cover more than 25 thousand miles, a virtual race around the world.

As many of you know, running has been my therapy for as long as I can remember and has served as a salve for my wounded heart more times than I can count. With each step I run will be paying tribute to the profession I love, and to those within the profession that need my help. If you cannot contribute financially, I completely understand.
