On August 4th, 2017 the entire TST team--guards, mamas, office staff, children and volunteers alike-- gathered together in the sprawling activity field by the base of Nkoaranga for our ANNUAL FIELD DAY with one ambitious fitness goal in mind: virtually ‘hike’ 70 miles or the length of Mount Kilimanjaro from base to summit, then up to Mount Meru and back down again in support of our Kili4Kids Campaign! It was a challenging feat to tackle, but we knew that we could do it together!
Adorning bright red t shirts, and eyes alit with anticipation, everyone gathered from their various departments and prepared for the festivities.
Of course, it was a little chaotic at times, but hey, that’s to be expected. I’d describe the silly events in further detail, but I think the images speak themselves.
Our winners, pictured below!
As you can see, we had A TON of fun. And, thanks to the concerted efforts of our entire team, we were able to meet our fitness goal at the conclusion of this wild and frenetic day of dust, chickens, donuts, tangled limbs and smiles!
Yes,there was quite a bit running, skipping, singing, falling, jumping, stumbling and lots of laughter as the banana leaves vaulted us all under the vast blue sky--it even seemed that Mount Meru, erect in the distance, heard our laughs and mirthfully laughed back!
These days, overflowing with warmth and love, help remind us why we all do what we do here. The Kili4Kids campaign pools together initiatives from all over the world to help support and strengthen the community of Nkoaranga. We are so grateful to work with children, individuals and small groups of passionate supporters from varying continents that believe that in order to support a child, you must empower the families and community in which they live.
Sometimes it feels a bit funny to say that we emphasize the creation of ‘leaders’ through our outreach programme- leadership is a word that has become blunted and dull, and it suffers chronic misuse today. But being in Tanzania--in the village of Nkoaranga, specifically-- reminds me that real leadership and real support are all about drawing out potential, encouraging people to do things they wouldn’t have otherwise done, and fortifying the spirit. Leaders don’t hoard ideas, lock away success, or act from places that are fearful or small. They stand behind others and gently direct them forward through an endless flow of compassion and encouragement--planting dreams in a fertile seedbed of possibility and wonder. I’m constantly reminded how lucky I am to work with individuals who embody this mindset daily.
Silly games, friendship, a helping hand, and caring for everyone you work with so genuinely- -what a wonderful constellation of feelings! Please continue to support our campaign as it comes to a close--we’re only $5,000 away from our goal and every small bit counts!
Help us run, jump and slide into the future smiling, together!
TEAM TST is
70 miles and raising funds for The Small Things. Please show your support and donate generously.
The Small Things (TST) currently supports over 130 vulnerable children and families in Tanzania. Our first priority is family preservation, and we have kept over 100 children in their families, supporting them through microfinance, business training, providing school fees, and more. We also have about 50 children in full time, residential care, with newborns – 3 year olds at Nkoaranga Orphanage, and 4 – 18 year olds in loving family-style homes at Happy Family Children’s Village.
TST believes in building and supporting happy families, in all their various shapes and forms. We create sustainable, participatory and evolving care plans for orphaned and vulnerable children and families in the Meru district of Tanzania. Working with the community, we aim to empower our clients and bringing together small acts from around the world to create big change.

A $20 donation is enough to feed one child for a month, while a $50 donation will pay for a week’s loving care by a local “mama.” $100 covers microfinance for a new business, to help children stay in families where they belong, and $500 provides food for the thirty children’s village kids for a full month!
