ABOUT SPRING FORWARD TO SUPPORT SUPPORTERS CAMPAIGN
Celebrate Women, Caretakers, Supporters May is Mental health Awareness Month and the month when we celebrate mothers and nurturers. Many supporters are women. They are the mothers, daughters, sisters, wives, and children who wear the many hats that supporters wear. The roles they assume include the following:- Act as informal case managers, encouraging and supporting treatment; identifying and securing housing, and arranging for income assistance
- Provide crisis intervention
- Assist with system navigation
- Advocate on behalf of their ill relative
- Monitor symptoms and support adherence to treatment plans to lessen the risk of relapse
- Provide housing, and assist with activities of daily living, including paying bills
- Maintain records of previous treatments, medications and hospitalizations
- Provide information on the context of a loved one’s life, to assist professionals in understanding them as a whole person
All the above without the education, training, and financial compensation that any professional with these job descriptions would receive. Let’s spring forward by offering them the tools they need and the peer network they belong with.Spring for Supporters is a campaign that focuses on self-care so that supporters have the energy and resources to accomplish their goals in caring for loved ones. Beginning May 1 for the whole month, model self-care through counting steps or however you want to participate. Have your family, best friend, colleagues or put together a team and challenge each other to achieve your goals and raise money by sharing your goals and getting sponsors to back you! Participants will receive string bags, pins, stickers, stress balls, and lots of encouragement. Winners will receive gifts from Grow a Strong Family! To convert your activity from minutes to steps, simply multiply the number of minutes you participated in the activity by the number indicated in the chart. For example: 30 minutes House cleaning x 101 steps/minute = 3,030 steps.
