ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION

Humanitarian Organization for Multicultural Experiences, Inc. (H.O.M.E, Inc.) is a nonprofit that has been in existence for 27 years. H.O.M.E, Inc. is a multicultural/minority health and human service agency that serves persons with Intellectual/developmental disabilities in Onondaga County through a variety of person-centered services (Community Habilitation, Respite, Day Habilitation, and Prevocational Services). Most of the clients we serve are minorities and/or live in poverty, have dual disabilities, and display behavioral challenges. Our mission is to help people with Intellectual/developmental disabilities and their families find the services and entitlements they need to lead a full and productive life. One of those things is to try to properly prepare the individuals we serve for the workforce with our prevocational program. All programs are Medicaid funded through the Office for People with Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD). A brief overview of each service we provide is as follows: • Day Habilitation services assist people to acquire, retain or improve their self-help, socialization, and adaptive skills, including communication, travel, and other areas in adult education. Activities and environments are designed to foster the development of skills and appropriate behavior, greater independence, community inclusion, relationship building, self-advocacy and informed choice. Additionally, people accessing day habilitation often contribute to their communities through volunteer work. • Prevocational Services prepare individuals with developmental disabilities for paid employment or meaningful community activities, including volunteering. • Respite is an “indirect” service that provides relief to people who are responsible for the primary care and support of a person with a developmental disability. • Community Habilitation is service to provide one-to-one or group training based on goals to people with intellectual/developmental disabilities to develop or enhance the skills needed to live more independently in their homes or in the community.
